The Good, The Bad And Ugly Side Of Email Advertising
Author: Hendrik Behrens
Nowadays there are many programs available for free that allow you to do almost anything with the text in the emails you sent. The email program or platform you choose to use for your advertising efforts depends entirely on your personal requirements and your background with computer software.
The majority of the basic platforms and software is a no brainer to use, since the developers have made a lot of progress to make them as user friendly as they can be. So to use emails today for staying in touch with friends and family has become effortless.
The more advance software and platforms have more options and enable the authors of the email messages to be more creative and make the content more interesting and attractive for the people it is addressed to. These types of emails are what entrepreneurs choose to use for advertising. They also use this for their follow-up messages through the use of auto-responders, which sent template messages out to the clients on the list at pre-selected time periods. Emails are also very useful for correspondence with your client base in the form of broadcasting newsletters. These emails normally have the capability to include HMTL text and Hyperlinks for the receiver to click and be directed to the advertised website.
Through the last few years however this form of advertising has been exploited and abused by marketers who made themselves guilty of sending out emails classified as SPAM.
Spam is the Internet version of unsolicited telemarketing phone calls. This bulk e-mail, or junk mail, arrives day and night in your mail program and can cause your e-mail program to clog.
Or put in another way:
Unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; thus junk e-mail.
Thus SPAM messages are those emails that land in your Inbox that you never requested or agreed to receive. These emails can be anything from product advertisements, to solicitations and even scams claiming you have just been randomly selected in an international lottery and must respond quickly to claim your winnings...
The only reason that SPAM still exists... (unfortunately) is that it works. And as long as it works it will pop-up in your Inbox. People actually do respond to these types of advertising emails and buy the advertised products.
But how does a SPAM email actually end up in your Inbox? People responsible for SPAMMING maintain lists of millions of active email addresses and they sell or exchange the names on the lists cheaply to one another. If your email address is on such a list, you will receive SPAM and a lot of it...
Nowadays it costs the "spammer" very little to nothing to send a bulk amount of advertising emails to the people on their lists. At the other end the receiver, however, "pays" with money, time and resources for something they never asked for and most likely do not want. Even if they do not pay for the time connected (to download the emails), they have to read through the pile of junk mail and delete it or set up filters just to get to their personal messages. All this effort is both time consuming and cause unnecessary annoyances. ISP services have to transport all the bulk emails and in the end the users pay for that service.
Luckily nowadays, due to consumer demand, there are some resources available and practical things you can do to help minimize advertising SPAM.
The most important tactic against SPAM is your mail software program. If SPAM annoys you, learn to set up filters for incoming emails to filter any message that may be regarded as SPAM. Most email software programs have build in filter with pre-set words to detect any SPAM and you can also edit these settings according to your needs.
Many SPAM messages will carry a line in them saying something like "If you do not want this mail, reply with REMOVE in the subject line." Don't respond to it! Spammers will use any means necessary to enrich their lists of email addresses with addresses they confirmed are active. When you respond and reply to any SPAM, you have told the spammer personally that your address is active, and nine times out of ten your confirmed email address will be sold to a even bigger giant list of spammers.
The best thing to do is to try to identify where the SPAM came from, and forward it with all headers intact to the email address abuse@domain where the SPAM originate from. The "domain" is the part of the email address after the "@" sign. For example, if you receive a SPAM message from abc@google.com. Then send an email to abuse@google.com. Some ISP service providers will make every effort to track down the culprit. If a particular SPAM message is hitting your mailbox repeatedly, by contacting the originating ISP provider directly is the best way to have a better chance at shutting the spammer down.
SPAM is no joke or fun to deal with for anybody. It wastes time and Internet resources and makes the Internet a more suspicious place for advertisers. Therefore the biggest mistake a marketer can do is to make themselves guilty of SPAM.
Respect your client's privacy and never send any advertising messages to people who never gave you permission to send them any type of advertising, no matter how great your deal or product is. It is also now required that all subscribed email messages have the option for the client to unsubscribe at any given time.
