Acne vulgaris is one of the most commonly known skin diseases. The various symptoms of this disease are scaly red skin, black heads, white heads, pinheads, pimples, large papules and scars. The parts of the body that are generally affected are face, chest and back. It is a diseasewhich mostly occurs during adolescence and continues through the youth. In some cases it disappears after the age of twenty five. It equally affects both the genders. This disease severely impairs a person's physical appearance. It could lead to development of inferiority complex and loss of self esteem. A person lacking in confidence is bound to be unsuccessful in his life. In extreme cases it could lead to depression and suicide.

Various causes of this disease are:
1. Psychological - In the modern competitive world human life has become extremely stressful and complex. Fatigue due to overwork could also lead to stress. Many people are suffering from from work related stress. A personal feud could also lead to stress. Scientific research has proved that stress and acne vulgaris are interrelated. It has also been proved that acne increases with increasing stress. So try to stay away from stress in order to reduce the effects of acne vulgaris.
2. Genetic - The cause of acne could also be genetic. This disease is known to pass from one generation to other. So in such cases nothing can be done except taking prompt medical treatment.
3. Hormonal- During puberty there is an increase in male hormones called androgens. Several hormones like androgens testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and insulin-like growth factor 1 are known to be responsible for the spread of acne vulgaris. Since during puberty, rise of hormones is a natural phenomenon which cannot be avoided so apart from taking proper treatment nothing else could be done.
4. Diet - Intake of a diet consisting of high glycemic load could also lead to worsening of acne vulgaris. Heavy intake of milk and chocolate is speculated to increase the effects of this disease.
5. Bacteria- Various species of bacteria such as anaerobic bacterium andStaphylococcus epidermidis species are also responsible for the spread of this disease.
6. Uncleanliness- Not maintaining proper cleanliness and proper hygiene and overexposure to sun are some of the common causes behind most of the skin related problems. Not taking a proper bath daily and overexposure to dust and sun could accentuate the effects of acne vulgaris.
