Essential AdSense Rules
Author: Victor Awo
The need to start using AdSense to earn money can be so urgent for many beginner webmasters that they often forgo the need to know some essential AdSense rules.
But ignoring the need can prove incredibly costly to some webmasters especially those that are planning to build websites based around more daring topics.
Every AdSense publisher should regularly look over Google's AdSense rules in order to make sure they don't inadvertently break them and get themselves banned. Getting accepted into the scheme can be difficult for some, so they should avoid putting their membership under risk by been lazy, sloppy or plain ignorant.
The primary AdSense rule involves click behaviour. Even though it may seem extremely obvious and a silly thing to do, many AdSense publishers still think they're been clever by clicking on their own ads. You cannot click on your own ads or ask your friends and family to click on your ads for you. The clicks you get must originate from genuine user interest... not your greed.
Google monitor the source of all the clicks on their ads, so they can easily catch anyone trying to inflate their click count artificially.
Another essential AdSense rule involves encouraging clicks. The more scheming AdSense publisher who doesn't know the rules might decide to encourage clicks by adding suggestive images and/or text to their website. Phrases such as ‘click these ads', ‘important resources', or ‘favourite sites', are not allowed next to Google ads. You can't use any artificial means to draw the attention of a user to the ads on your site. Arrows, symbols, pictures cannot be used to attract the eye of a visitor to the ads on your site.
You can't also format the ads and the content in your site in a way that makes them indistinguishable from each other.
Basically, you are not allowed to mislead visitors in any way that encourages them to click on the ads. Their interest in the ads in your site must be genuine.
An important AdSense rules to watch for concerns allowable content material. AdSense has a strict content guideline policy, which states that AdSense cannot be placed on pages that contain adult and violent content. Other questionable sites include those that contain:
- Material with excessive profanity
- Content that discusses hacking and cracking
- Gambling and casino material
- Content that sells alcohol, tobacco and prescription drugs
It is important to know this particular AdSense rule if you happen to be starting out because it prevents you from wasting your time and resources on a project that might not be accepted due to its questionable content.
There are many more AdSense rules that you need to know but these rules are the ones that are often broken by those starting out on the scheme.
AdSense has a lot of rules. The rules are there to police the most popular pay-per-click scheme on the web. To prevent falling foul of the scheme, remember to read AdSense rules regularly. It is the only way to make sure that you have a long healthy relationship with Google AdSense.
