How to Enjoy Your Technology for Less
Author: Lane Kramer
If you're a fan of gadgets and computers then you probably get a huge buzz out of opening a new laptop or tablet, setting it up, and then having your first play around with it. Most likely you probably spend a lot of time browsing tech websites and magazines, and read all kinds of reviews for every new device that comes out.
This is all a lot of fun in a geeky way, and having the latest gadgets will also mean you can work faster and enjoy more media so it's all good. But the problem is that technology is also a very expensive hobby, and that owning all the latest gadgets is something that will cost you a lot. Unfortunately computers and things don't hold their value all that well and seeing as technology moves so fast that means you're forced to spend several hundred dollars a year just to stay on the cutting edge.
Unless that is, you know some of the best tricks for getting cheap devices. Here we will look at some ways that you can enjoy gadgets for less.
Buy Used
This is one of the most obvious ways to get your products for less, and buying used doesn't necessarily have to mean that you compromise on the quality or the condition of your purchase either. Buying used for instance can simply mean buying ex-display items which will likely be in just as good condition as brand new items. Alternatively it might mean buying refurbished gadgets, which will have been repaired to be just as good as new.
Import
Another option is to import your gadgets from abroad, in which case you can often save a lot of money. If you live in the UK then important your tech from the US will help you to save a lot of money, but even if you're in the US you may be able to get your items more cheaply by getting them from China or Japan.
Trade In
Another option is to trade in your devices to make savings rather than just buying new things all the time. If you want to get the latest iPhone each time it comes out then, just make sure to keep your current one in the best condition possible (use a screen cover and case at all times) then sell that on when you want your new one. Alternatively if you're upgrading your laptop then get it refurbished and you can sell it for not much less than you bought it.
Improve/Modify
If you can't afford the device you want, then often you can build it yourself or upgrade a cheaper alternative. For instance why would you buy a 128GB Surface Pro, when you can buy a 64GB model then add in a 64GB SD card much more cheaply? In fact you can even use a 1TB storage card or an external hard drive and it will still be cheaper than buying the more expensive model with the extra memory built in.
