African American Employment
By Ajay Shringi
Employment opportunities for low skilled labor have fallen in the past 40 years. A lot of people consider that the huge immigration during this span is responsible for this. But there is no real evidence on which you can consider immigration, as the root cause of the problem.
Relevant statistical data shows, that the typical African American employee has shown worse development in “jobless recovery” than any others. In 2001 after a recession in the world market scenario, employment opportunity was much low for African Americans.
The actual reason for the racial discrimination is yet not clear. But some scholars believe that the following causes have led to the situation. They feel,
Labor demand remained low during this stage of recovery. This has created a great impact on the employment problem of the minorities.
Four years of recession has been a massive fall of the industrial development, employment opportunities of the African Americans ware also down. As the African American mass mainly comprised of the unskilled labors, opening in the field of manufacturing was still not available.
Discrimination in the labor market is still there. Differences are made between African and American males. For this reason, the federal government has formulated some basic laws to maintain equality among all.
The federal laws on race discrimination:
1. It is unlawful for an employer to discriminate against somebody on the basis of race.
2. It is also not lawful for an employer to harass an employee by making offensive remarks on the ground of race or class.
3. By law, an employer cannot isolate or group workers on the basis of race.
4. If an employer excludes member form a group or classify the workers on the basis of race he can be sent to jail.
5. An employer cannot ask somebody to mention their race or color in a job application.
Moreover, the enormous change in technology, governmental policies and the stagnant wage patter are some other important reasons for the poor employment opportunities for the African Americans.
Some people opine, though much has been done for the development of the African Americans, they have not shown much development. They believe, the Asian Americans have shown a drastic development despite all problems. Even the Asian Africans did not have sufficient capital, but they took Bank loans or Governmental aid to start their self employed business. Now only 4.5 percent of the blacks have their own business. They generate much lower revenue in comparison to the Asian American or the White Americans.
