The Who Am I Koan
When we ask ourselves the question who am I in earnest, we have this expectation that we can answer the question. In reality though it is a trick question which is designed to push you further and further into self, until you surrender completely and find no self exists and the question of who am I is totally irrelevant. However this is not a conceptual exercise. It isn't like saying ok I give up now and then you awaken. It isn't even like saying well since I can't define who I am, I just give up trying. It more akin to being in a fight with an adversary so powerful you stand no chance. This adversary keeps on punching you, until your down on your knees and you think ok I have had enough, I can't stand it. But when you say that, you almost instantly say "hang on I am not done yet". Your adversary keeps on punching you constantly. This time you are on your very last breath of life and again you say ok had enough. That still isn't awakening. Somehow you manage to have the thought "I am still not done, I am going to die, I know it, but I am not going to give it up to my adversary". Your adversary swings at you with a fury and rage that is beyond fear and the final death blow comes; you are completely and utterly shattered emotionally, intellectually, on all levels you are defeated. You are immobilized and death ensues. You know the futility of the exercise as a deep felt experience encompassing all facets of your human form. You give up, you let death take you. When death takes you, you look around and you are not there. Something is there though; something that seems so beautiful that it is inexpressible. That is still not awakening. I bet you wish it was though.. You have a sense that its not quite the end of the road, the advesary is still swinging blows at you, even in death, so you surrender again. The embrace of the nothingness takes you and everything vanishes (God's will be done). And then you discover that you are this nothingness, this void, that can never be stated here in this world. That's awakening. Thats the real purpose of asking the question "who am I". To come to know the futility of asking the question in the first place. To come to know the futility of asking any question. To come to know the futility of having knowledge and spiritual techniques. Who are you? Edward Traversa

What Can You Do In One Day For it is written in Bible in chapter 2 Peter 3:8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Going Where Youve Never Gone Before One of the first issues people on the spiritual path have to address is a doctrinal one: Is it wrong to ask questions that I've never asked before? Is asking questions about the truth we've been taught "sinful?" Your answer can have a dramatic effect on your ability to explore who you are and what you believe in without guilt! If anyone has ever told you that the path to spiritual self-awareness (defined in it's simplest terms as "knowing who you are and what you believe in, and letting those beliefs be the driving force in your life") is an easy one, they were being less than honest!Finding your own truth in these times of confusion and change is no small undertaking, and it isn't surprising that many people begin the journey full of hope and enthusiasm, but - as each step becomes even more difficult because it requires even more honestly with yourself and with others - they begin to lose courage. They find a comfortable plateau - a point in their lives where things are better than they used to be - and they decide that staying where they are might not be such a bad option. Where Are You, God? Do you ever have one of those days when you wonder if God is really there? Does he really exist? If he does, then why can't you see Him or even sense His presence? Why do you feel so desolate, so alone? I was in that place a few days ago.I stood at my window facing south on a cold winter's day. What Is Wrong With Being Common? Servants of the Antichrist The "Left Behind" series is inspiring, in that it makes people think about serious, life-and-death situations. Where is Your Focus? I have a long-term goal--a life-long goal really--to develop the mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:16). The One Who Heals It's late. Spirituality: Living the Whole The words 'new age' and 'spirituality' can have people running for the hills, or perhaps it would be more appropriate to say running to their urban sanctuary of material distractions. Connect with Spirit Spirit - All Around Us, All of Us, Every One of UsANY time we connect with something or someone, we're also connected with Spirit (also known as God, the Universe, Higher Power, the Source). While our personal definition of Spirit is unique, when we connect with that Spirit it immediately connects us with something outside of ourselves. The Gratitude Toll I very often see rants, complaints, wishes and dreams that have a similar theme, and that theme goes something like this: "Here is my dream and here is what I have been able to do, but I can't seem to get any further and it feels like I've hit a brick wall. No matter what I do, I can't seem to bring more (customers, gigs, sales, days, money, friends, etc. Lectio Divina -- Reading the Bible for Spiritual Growth Lectio divina is a very useful and practical discipline for spiritual growth. Rooted in ancient monasticism, the practice is a fourfold cycle: Reading, Meditation, Prayer, and Contemplation. |
