Top Ten Tips for Writing your Best Press Release Ever
Keep these few crucial details in mind when writing and submitting your press release to increase your chances of news coverage: 1. If you are not the news: become the news. No matter what your release is about, you need to find a way to tie into the news. Make use of current trends and statistics. 2. Make sure your headline is catchy, compelling the reader to continue. Research your newspaper to see what works to help you write one. 3. Use "Who, what, where, when, why, how" but not in that order. Your first paragraph should state the problem your product/service/book is trying to solve. This is the "why". 4. Your next few paragraphs should contain the "what" and "who" that is solving the problem. Your last paragraph is the "when and "where". 5. Keep it short and sweet. Concise contact information should be included on the top and bottom of the release. Provide a link to your website. 6. Do not "advertise" - this is the news. Keep it fact-based. 7. Use short quotes that evoke an emotion about the product/service/book. 8. Type ### at the end of your release to indicate there are no more pages. A release of more than one page is not recommended. 9. Include a brief history section at the bottom of your release with details about your company or your bio. 10. Most importantly - research and send it to the correct editor using the method they prefer to receive it. Don't just assume that fax is okay. If you are unsure, pick up the phone and find out. The Non-business Business Think for a moment! If you were to do a business, profession or a job that you loved, something that was a passion, you considered worth doing, one that gave you joy; would you ever think early retirement or rush home early from work? 'Doubtful' is a certainty, to say the least!A few years ago, I perchance drifted across a book titled 'To Sail Beyond the Sunset' in which Robert Heinlein's character, Jubal Harshaw, said something that left a lasting impression on me, and ergo, naturally, on the way I look at life. Jubal says "Happiness lies in being privileged to work hard for long hours in doing whatever you think is worth doing. Inoculate Yourself Against Bad PR What is bad PR?Well, if you're a business, non-profit or associationmanager, bad PR does nothing positive about the behaviors of those important outside audiences of yours that most affect your operation. It fails to create external stakeholder behavior change leading directly to achieving your managerial objectives. Franchise Work Vehicles Should Have a Flag on Them If you own a franchise and have company vehicles, be sure you have a flag on it. First let's discuss the American flag. There Is No Such Thing as Competition A wise friend of mine has often said, "There is no such thing as competition." I happen to agree with that philosophy. PR: Behavior Modification Specialist While awaiting economic recovery, business needs to attract the attention of its most important external audiences in a more targeted and focused way. Primarily to impact the perceptions of those key outsiders so that resulting behaviors help those managers achieve their objectives. Managers: Why PR is SO Key When outside audiences important to your operation do not understand what you are all about or, worse, harbor misconceptions, inaccuracies, untruths and false assumptions about you, you are likely to suffer negative, key audience behaviors that can prevent you from achieving your operating objectives. As a business, non-profit or association manager, you simply cannot avoid such consequences when you allow external target audiences to hold negative perceptions about you which lead inevitably to those hurtful behaviors. Business Growth for Financial Planners in Five Easy Steps Attracting new business: sometimes it happens by luck, sometimes by referral. Trouble is, "sometimes" just isn't often enough. Five Great News Stories You're Sitting On Right Now Smaller companies don't always have the budget - or inclination - to retain a PR hotshot to tell the world about their business success, but that doesn't mean they aren't a ready source of news. The problem is it's often dull news which is ignored by all except the industry press and quite rightly so in most cases. Public Relations: Power Tool for the 21st Century I address this article to businesses, associations, non-profits and public entity managers seeking a direct connection between the money they're planning to spend on public relations, and the achievement of their organizational objectives. We can save a lot of time - you and I - if we can agree onone point: I believe that deep down - and I mean DEEP down - most chief executives understand that doing something about thebehaviors of their most significant external audiences can rank inimportance right up there with increased sales and earnings. Got Publicity? How to Become a Household Name Are you working as hard as you can in your area of expertise? Are you implementing creative ideas? Are you valuable to your clients? And now the tough question: Does the public know about you? If you're like most business people, you answered "Yes" to the first three questions, and then perhaps hesitated on the last question and may have ultimately answered "No," or sheepishly said "Well, not as much as I'd hoped."Getting your name "out there" requires getting yourself "out there. Think Big Would you like to be the next Dr. Phil, Suze Orman or Guy Kawasaki? When I ask people that question, they usually say something like, "I'd be happy to be able to reach $100,000 in revenues," or "Hey, I'd settle for being able to take a week-long vacation. Public Relations - Defining Your Organization from the Inside Out What do your customers say about your company?Would you let your major competitor control your sales strategy?Public relations is an inevitable consequence of being in business. Lets Blow The Lid Off Public Relations And show it for what it is - a humdinger of a strategy machine using cutting-edge communications tactics that lead directly to program success. And all because perceptions were altered, behaviors modified and the employer/client satisfied with the end result. Cutting Down Your Trade Show Budget Whenever a recession or volatility threatens the economy, companies immediately look at where they can cut budgets. Without much forethought, the first to hit the block is inevitably training, followed closely behind by marketing. Make Your PR Budget Work Harder Do it by restructuring your business, non-profit or association public relations program so that it delivers the stakeholder behavior changes you want.
