Pet Tips for a Safe Fourth of July
With the Fourth of July holiday quickly approaching, keeping your pet safe during the festivities is critical. Fireworks are the main cause of stress for animals during the Fourth of July, and more pets get lost during this holiday than any other time of the year. Here are SICSA’s top 6 tips to keep your pet safe during this time.
1. Create a safe space for your pet. Provide your pet with a safe place to stay during the events such as fireworks. This can be a room, comfy bed, blanket, or crate/carrier. Keep the door closed until the fear-inducing events are over to minimize sound and escape routes. Turning the TV on to minimize sound is one way you can help with your pet’s fear and anxiety.
2. Register your microchip & make sure your pet has an ID tag attached to their collar. If your pet does escape and become lost during festivities, these identification measures will make them easier to return if found.
3. Take a current photo of your pet. If your pet becomes lost, you can post this photo on social media or print on “lost pet” flyers. This will help others be able to easily identify your pet.
4. Gear up with a leash and harness. While we recommend keeping your pets inside for the holiday, if you are planning on taking your pets outside for the festivities, make sure you use a leash and harness to keep your pet safe and secure. Keep in mind, dogs’ hearing tend to be better than that of humans. This means sounds such as fireworks that are already loud to the human ear, are even more so for our pets.
5. Try a calming aid. If your pet is having a difficult time relaxing during the festivities, try a calming aid, like Pet Wants Calming Balm. Speak to your Vet about medication or over-the-counter treatments.
6. Ensure they have adequate access to water throughout the entire day. If you plan on bringing your pet along to a parade or barbecue, be sure they stay hydrated and avoid overheating.
