What Qualifications Do You Need to Become a Violin Teacher?
Many students nowadays—both young and old— are keen on learning how to play the violin because of its innately beautiful and soothing sound. And while there are a great number of schools offering violin courses, not all of these can provide the right teachers suitable for the needs of the students.
Serious students who want to learn how to pay the violin are very particular in choosing their teachers. Aside of course from the skills of the teacher in playing the instrument, many students are looking for personable mentors who are not intimidating. Likewise, depending on the teacher's personality and character, he or she may be fit to teach young children or older learners.
The very first requirement for someone who wants to teach violin is a solid academic background. You cannot teach the violin if you yourself do not have adequate knowledge about the instrument. If you are planning to apply to a violin school which offers diverse classes to different types of students, it would be best to arm yourself with broad musical education, significant trainings, and proven track record of grooming students. This is important as many students and parents (who enroll their children to violin classes) are fussy about the qualifications, ability, and competitiveness of the teachers.
Your inherent characteristics are also a plus when you are applying for a job as a teacher, such as patience, sense of humor, and fair judgment. Aside from your knowledge in playing the violin, be prepared to know that many students have high expectations of the violin class. Depending on how you handle and communicate with your students, they may either stick or leave.
A dose of sense of humor can be an advantage whether you are handling children or older students. Your student may feel stiff and uneasy, especially in private one-to-one lessons, if you are too serious. Injecting a little fun in your class will make it easier for the students to follow and learn. Just avoid being too familiar— especially among young students— who may prefer to joke around rather than study and learn.
Having a good teaching methodology that has been adopted from leading music schools can be an advantage for you whether you are teaching freelance or work in a violin school. Attending trainings and seminars will help improve your knowledge on the instrument and develop our teaching techniques as well. Moreover, children and adults have different needs and requirements from their teachers.
Lastly, it is equally important that you maintain your patience in teaching your students, especially if they are beginners. This is important to boost their interest and perseverance in the class.
