Autumn Driving Tips

Author: Conner Leblanc

Autumn is arguably one of the most beautiful times of year. It signifies a host of wonderful things, like warm, comfy sweaters, foliage, and fresh baked pumpkin pies. But along with changing leaves and delicious desserts comes a change in driving conditions. Fall driving can be unpredictable due to many factors, but mostly because of weather changes and the end of daylight saving time. To be safe and aware on the roads this fall, follow these guidelines:

  • Watch out for leaves. It may be tempting relive your childhood and drive through a huge pile of leaves to watch them scatter, but leaves actually represent a very real danger. Once leaves become wet they present slippery and dangerous driving conditions, so be sure to watch for and avoid patches of wet leaves on the road. Dry leaves can also present a problem to your vehicle. Avoid parking your vehicle near dry leaves to prevent fires that could start from your vehicle's catalytic converter.
  • Stay alert on the road. Daylight savings time and the beginning of fall coincide to create a host of changing weather conditions. Along with limited daylight comes frequent fog and unpredictable weather patterns. Even on familiar roads, it's important that drivers exercise additional caution and adjust their driving habits to watch for pedestrians and cyclists who will be less visible, especially during the first week of the change. In such conditions it is advisable to utilize your headlights or fog lamps.
  • Check your tire pressure. Comfortable, cooler weather also means that your tires are likely to lose air pressure. Stay on top of the change in weather by frequently checking and adjusting your tire pressure to fit the recommended specifications.
  • Treat yourself to a nice pair of sunglasses. Sun glare can present itself at any time throughout the fall, and could temporarily limit your vision for long enough to cause an accident. It's a good idea to keep a nice pair of shades handy to minimize the chances of this becoming an issue.
  • Watch out for deer. Deer collisions account for thousands of auto accidents nationwide, and represent a serious concern for motorists, especially in the South. Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, so exercise extreme caution during these times by reducing your speed and increasing your alertness.
  • Be prepared for rainfall. Autumn often means elevated levels of precipitation. While you should always be cautious in wet conditions, it's also a good time to perform a little inexpensive vehicle maintenance. Precautions, such as cleaning your headlights or buying new wind shield wipers, can go a long way in preventing problems before they arise.
